How to Choose a Martial Arts School in Sydney (5 Things to Look For)
By TKA Martial Arts · September 2026 · 5 min read
Sydney has no shortage of martial arts schools, and on paper a lot of them look the same: nice website, good photos, a free trial offer. So how do you actually tell a good school from a mediocre one before you commit? Here's what to genuinely look for, whether you end up training with us or somewhere else.
1. Check the Instructors' Real Credentials
Ask directly: what's the head instructor's grade, and how long have they been teaching, not just training? A school should be able to answer this without hesitation. It matters because the person running your class shapes everything about the experience, safety, technique, and how motivating it actually feels to show up.
2. Watch a Class Before You Join
Any legitimate school should let you watch, or better yet, try a class before signing up. Pay attention to how instructors talk to students, especially kids: are they patient and encouraging, or just running through motions? Do students look genuinely engaged, or bored and going through the motions?
3. Ask About Contracts and Lock-Ins
Be wary of any school that pressures you into a long-term contract before you've even tried a class. A confident school will let you start with a free trial and a flexible, no lock-in membership, because they know the training speaks for itself.
4. Look at the Facility, Not Just the Marketing
Clean mats, proper safety equipment, and a well-organised space say a lot about how seriously a school takes its students. If a school won't show you the actual training floor, that's worth noting.
5. Read Reviews, But Read Them Properly
Don't just check the star rating, read a handful of the actual written reviews. Look for specific, detailed feedback about instructors and results, not generic five-star comments with no substance.
